mars Episode 2 Ling riding on the road Ling saw, at the intersection ahead, a semi-trailer came out from the street to cross the street. Ling squeezed the handbrakes to slow down. It didn't work. Instead he saw braking fluid leaking out of a cut. Ling glanced downward quickly. The semi-trailer had now crossed halfway on Ling's side of street. In no time, the whole semi-trailer completely blocked Ling's side of the street. More braking fluid was leaking from the cable. Ling glanced sideway and backward to check the condition. He had to slide the whole bike under the semi-trailer. He dropped his helmet when he came out from the bottom of the semi-trailer. Finally, Ling was able to stop the bike. At a motorcycle repair shop "Fortunately, you reacted quickly. Otherwise, you would either have already died or half dead at the speed you normally ride. Both your front and rear brake lines have been cut-off. Does someone have a grudge against you?" The mechanic said to Ling as he examined the motorcycle. Too many to count." Ling answered "You'd better be careful. Do you still race?" The mechanic asked. "My bike's out of service and I've got no money. How can I race?" Ling said. Ling turned around to pull a chair over to sit. "Did you fight again with your dad?" The mechanic asked as he continued working on Ling's bike. "Yes. I just don't get along with him. And he keeps bugging me to quit riding motorcycles all the time." Ling said. "He's just worried about you. Why don't you take the opportunity to move back home?" The mechanic said. "Go home. If I go home, I think I'd go crazy." Ling said. "But, You're already crazy anyway." The mechanic said, looking up at Ling. "Ha Ha! True, true." Ling said. Teacher Fang came out of a school building, drinking water. "Good morning, Teacher Fang." Students greeted him as they saw him. "Good morning." Teacher Fang nodded and replied to them. Teacher Fang took out a handkerchief to wipe his mouth. Suddenly someone grabbed his right upper arm tightly from behind. He turned to see that it was Ling. "Good morning, teacher." Ling said as he forced Teacher Fang to turn to a different direction. "It seems that you have more than one side that people don't know about." Ling said as he quickly walked down the stairs, pulling Teacher Fang forcibly along with him. "What are you talking about?" Teacher Fang said nervously. "Stop pretending. I almost ended up lying in a hospital bed." Ling said as they got to the bottom of the stairs and turned the corner to another flight of stairs. Ling held Teacher Fang at the top of the long and steep flight of stairs. Ling stepped behind Teacher Fang and pulled both arms of the latter. The water bottle dropped and fell down the stairs. "Fortunately, I like thrilling and dangerous things." Ling said with Teacher Fang feet at the edge of floor. "But, dear Teacher Fang. If we're going to play, we should go all-out” Ling said, breathing closely behind Teacher Fang. "If it were me, I wouldn't leave something unfinished.” Ling said as he put both hands atop Teacher Fang's shoulder and starting pushing Teacher Fang forward. Teacher Fang strained hard to hold his feet to the ground. Abruptly Ling let go of Teacher Fang. Ling patted Teacher Fang and then walked down the stairs alone. Ling paused after walking down a few steps. He turned around to face upward at Teacher Fang. "Oh yeah... If I remember correctly, Teacher, you're driving a white Civic, right?" He said. "Be careful when you drive." Ling said as he pointed at Teacher Fang. Ling then turned and walked down the stairs. Ling bent over his desk sleeping in a classroom. Students were packing their stuff and leaving the classroom. "Classmates, classmates. I have just heard some news from the administration office that Teacher Fang, who teaches English, has just quitted abruptly." One student came into the classroom and announced to the class. "Oh, Why?" Many students asked. Both Daye and Qiluo looked suspiciously at the sleeping Ling. Qiluo was sharpening a pencil in a classroom. "Hey, Chen Ling. Are you listening to what I'm saying?" Qingmei asked as Ling and Qingmei walked into the classroom. "Yeah. Yeah. I'm listening." Ling said as he saw Qiluo and changed his direction, walking toward where Qiluo sat. "I heard you broke up with Vivian the junior." Qingmei said "Is that right? Why did we break up?" Ling asked on his way to where Qiluo sat. "Stop it. I mean it." Qingmei said, following Ling. "I mean what I say, too." Ling said. "Forget it if you don't want to say." Qingmei said as Ling stopped and turned into the row where Qiluo sat. "Hey! Take me for a ride on your bike sometime." Qingmei asked Ling as Ling walked toward the seat next to Qiluo. "No. My bike gets jealous when I let girls ride and knocked me off to the ground” Ling refused her and sat next to Qiluo. Qiluo turned up and smiled quickly at Ling. Qingmei looked at Qiluo. Qingmei deliberately nudged Qiluo when she walked past behind Qiluo to take the seat next to Ling on the other side. The small knife cut into one of Qiluo's finger. "Oh, I'm sorry.” Qingmei apologized to Qiluo as she was taking the seat. "What are you doing?" Ling glanced up at Qingmei and said. "You're bleeding." Ling said to Qiluo when he turned to look at Qiluo and saw blood oozing from the cut. "How clumsy!" Ling said and picked up Qiluo's finger to suck the blood. Qiluo, Qingmei, and Daye were astonished by Ling's action and watched him in shock. Qiluo withdrew her finger immediately. Daye doing warm up on the track Daye was stretching his leg, doing warming up on the track while Ling stood by his side. "By what you were doing, you've unknowingly putt her in a very dangerous position. Do you know that?" Daye said to Ling. "Dangerous. Oh, you are referring to that." Ling said as he pointed to his mouth. "That's a habit I have since my childhood." Ling continued. "What a strange habit. It is not as if you look ugly and nobody wants you. Why did you have to like someone simple, conservative and don't know how to take care of herself." Daye said before he started stretched his arms. "Let me tell you. If anything happens to Qiluo because of you, I won't get involved." Daye said before he lifted his legs. "Why are you so concerned about her? You like Qiluo, don't you?" Ling said. "What are you talking about? Do I like her?" Daye stopped and turned to face Ling. "Yes. You do. I've suspected of it for a long time." Ling said. "One moment you said she was weird. Next moment you told me to stay away from her. Now..." Ling said as Daye crouched at the start line. "Are you interested in Qiluo?" Daye asked. "Do you like Qiluo or not?" Ling retorted. "So what." Daye said and crouched at the start line again. "I've been a nobody since my high school." Daye said before he started running. Qiluo, Qingmei, and Qingmei's friends on a rooftop balcony "You've got quite an attitude lately, classmate." One of Qingmei's friend said to Qiluo. "Don't think you're so high and mighty just because somebody's been a little nicer to you lately. Do you think Ling would be serious with a girl like you?" The other girl said to Qiluo. "Hey, what kind of expression is that?" The first girl pushed and hit Qiluo. "Do you feel we're bully you?" The second girl asked. Qiluo remained quiet. "Say something." The second girl pushed Qiluo. Qingmei started walking up to Qiluo. "I just don't like the way you look pitiful and miserable. Everyday you hide in a corner acting pitiful. You also react slowly. I feel sick whenever I see you. You like to act pitiful, don't you? Fine. Today I'll grant your wish." Qingmei said. "But I hope you'll always remember that don't ever go near Chen Ling again." Qingmei bent forward and said to Qiluo. The three of them started hitting Qiluo and threw her clothes off to the ground. After that, they walked back to the classroom, looking smugly satisfied. Teacher Shi's Class Teacher Shi walked into the classroom with some notes in one hand and a coffee in his other hand. "Classmates, Class begins." Teacher Shi said. He put down his note. He took a sip of coffee, looking around the class. "Han Qiluo isn't here. She usually doesn't skip class." Teacher Shi said as he flipped through his notes. "Teacher, Han Qiluo won't be here today." Qingmei said. "She won't be here?" Teacher Shi said. "It's strange. Even Daye and Chen Ling aren't here, either." Teacher Shi said after he glanced quickly around the class again. "Fine. Let's get ready to start the class. Please take out your text books and turn to page 145." Teacher Shi said. Meanwhile, Daye was running on the track and Ling was walking and drinking a can of Pepsi, thinking. Ling climbing up stairs to the rooftop. Ling walked up to the rooftop, drinking Pepsi and looking around. Suddenly he saw Qiluo sitting in a corner in socked feet and hiding her face in her arms over her knees. Qiluo lifted up her head to look up at Ling and then hid her face again. Ling started walking toward Qiluo. Qiluo looked up again and buried her face in her arms, starting crying again. Ling crouched down in front of Qiluo. "What happened? How did it come to this? Was it because of me? Who did it?" Ling asked. "It's none of your business. It's all because I'm too timid, so people don't like me." Qiluo said after she raised her head to look up at Ling. Ling took off his jacket. "Where did you live? I'll take you home." Ling asked as he put his jacket around Qiluo. "Let's go. Are you still thinking about stay here and continue school?" Ling said when Qiluo looked up at him. Ling and Qiluo at the school parking lot Ling walked up to his bike with Qiluo following behind. Ling gave Qiluo his helmet, but Qiluo didn't accept it. "Don't tell me you still consider going back to the class." Ling asked after a long pause. "Didn't you say you wouldn't let people ride your bike?" Qiluo asked. "I've changed my mind." Ling said. Qiluo still wouldn't accept the helmet. "Yeah. If you get on the bike, you’ll have to be very close to me. Moreover, you have to hold me really tight, and yet you don't like men." Ling said. "Forget it, if you're so reluctant." Ling said as Qiluo remained motionless. Finally Qiluo stretched out her hands for the helmet. Ling gave her the helmet. Ling got on his bike. Qiluo sat behind him wearing Ling's helmet. "Make sure the helmet's buttoned up." Ling said to Qiluo. "Where's yours?" Qiluo asked as she buttoned the helmet. "Aaah. The bike has only one helmet. You'd better pray for me not to be caught." Ling answered. "Are you ready?" Ling checked with Qiluo after he was ready to start the bike. "Hold me tight." Ling said laughingly. Qiluo grabbed Ling hurriedly as Ling rode the bike away. Meanwhile in the classroom Qingmei's friend who sat next to her heard of the sound of a motorcycle roaring and rumbling "Qingmei, motorcycle sound!" Qingmei's friend called her attention to it. After pausing and thinking for a moment, Qingmei ran hurriedly out of the classroom. "Lai Qingmei, what are you doing? We're in class!" Teacher Shi called after Qingmei when he saw her running out of the classroom. Qingmei ran up to the rooftop and saw Ling speeding away with Qiluo. Meanwhile, Daye was exhausted, lying on the track. Ling and Qiluo arrived in front of the apartment building where Qiluo lived. "Thank you." Qiluo said as she returned Ling's helmet to her. "Were you scared?" Ling asked Qiluo after he placed the helmet atop his bike. "Since I had got on your bike, I could only trust you. Fear wouldn't help." Qiluo said. "Thank you for willing to trust yourself with me." Ling said. "You like to do insincere, momentary, sweet talk." Qiluo said. Ling got embarassed and stopped laughing. "Thank you for helping me so much." Qiluo thanked Ling again. "You’ve just rescued me. Last time you said you would protect me. I know you didn't really mean it, but I'm still very happy about them. They are very important to me because I haven't been this close to other people for a very long time." Qiluo said to Ling with her head bending low. "Thank you." Qiluo looked up at Ling and turned to leave. "Qiluo." Ling called and ran to her. "Qiluo." Ling caught up with her on the steps. Qiluo staggered a little bit as Ling grabbed her arm. Qiluo's mother happened to come home and saw Ling grabbed Qiluo's arm. "What are you doing?" Qiluo's mother pulled Ling apart. "Mom you got it all wrong. He wasn't going to hurt me. Something happened at school. He rescued me and took me home with his bike." Qiluo explained to her mom. Qiluo mother looked at the motorcycle. "This is my mother." Qiluo introduced her mom to Ling but her mom stared ahead without turning her head to look at Ling. "I'm sorry. I just saw Qiluo looking rather helter-skelter, so...” Qiluo said to Ling without looking at him. "Aunt, don't mention it. Yeah, I haven't introduced myself. I'm Chen Ling. I'm Qiluo's classmate." Ling said. "Nice to meet you. I'm at your service." Ling stretched out his hand and bowed his head. Qiluo's mother held her hand out to shake with Ling reluctantly but then was surprised that Ling pulled her hand closer with both of his hands. "Wow. This is what a mother's hand is. Very warm." Ling said, bending forward to examine her hand. "Qiluo. Shouldn't we go up?" Qiluo's mother said to Qiluo after she pulled her hand back. Qiluo's mother went up first by herself and turned around to look at them again. "Qiluo. Hurry up." Qiluo's mother said when she saw Qiluo didn't move. "Oh." Qiluo turned to leave. "Wei." Ling stopped her. "Nothing important. I just want to ask you what you think of Daye. What I mean is that if you think he is filthy or you don't like him at all." Ling said. "Why do you think this way?" Qiluo asked. "What I mean is... nothing. That's all." Ling said. Qiluo turned and go up the steps. Ling stayed there, watching her. Qiluo entered the apartment. Qiluo hung up Ling's jacket and sat down, looking at it and thinking. Ling visited Minggao at the hospital. "You want me to be in races? Are you sure about that? I don't even have a bike. How am I going to compete?" Ling asked Minggao. "I'll get the bike ready. Maintenance and repairs aren't issues, either. All you're responsible is riding the bike." Minggao said to Ling. Ling remained quite and uncertain. "Don't you want to be a GP rider? Then you must first perform well in some international races before you're qualified for GP." Minggao said to Ling. "I think this time if we're lucky, we may be able to get an original bike from some manufacturer." Minggao said. "Really?" Ling was surprised by it. Minggao nodded and turned halfway to face Ling. "Those manufactures are looking for some young and promising riders to represent them in racers. What do you think of it?" Minggao said. "But I have been out of it for so long." Ling said after some thoughts. "No problem. I'll find some people and form a team. I'll in charge of training you. How about that?" Minggao said. Minggao put out his hand. So did Ling. They shook and held their hands tight. "OK” Ling said. Xiangzi appeared. "Are you guys finished chit-chatting?" Xiangzi said to them. "We’re finished." Minggao said. "Then let's start practicing." Xiangzi said. "Fine." Minggao said. "Let's go." Xiangzi said as she walked to Minggao's side to help him. "I can handle it." Minggao said. Ling saw Minggao's false leg when Minggao stood up. "Let's go." Minggao and Xiangzi walked away. "I'll be in touch with you." Minggao turned to say to Ling, after he and Xiangzi walked a few paces. Ling smiled. "So you're leaving. Bye bye." Xiangzi said to Ling. Qiluo and her mother having dinner together "Today is an exception. From now on you're not allowed to ride that kind of motorcycle and spend time with that kind of slackers." Qiluo's mother said. "Mom, he got his license lawfully. He also participates in races. He's not the kind of person you think he is." Qiluo said. "In racing, so what? What's the difference between him and the slacker who ran over your father?" Qiluo's mother said. "Not every motorcycle rider is like that. Ling is a good person." Qiluo said after some pause. The two of them continued eating. Ling came home at night. "Ling." Qingmei, waiting for Ling outside, saw and called to stop him. "Why are you here? What are you here for?" Ling asked when turned and found out it was Qingmei. "Why do you mean by that? Didn't you say that no one could ride your bike? Why did you let Han Qiluo ride?" Qingmei stepped forward and asked. "It was because some people were mean to her." Ling said. "That's her own matter. Why did you get involved with that?" Qingmei said. "I feel like it." Ling said. "Why are you so caring of her?" Qiluo asked. "That's my business." Ling answered. "How about me? I've been waiting for you. Ling." Qiluo asked as Ling turned to leave. "I told you not to wait for me." Ling said facing sideway and walked away. "Why did you go to bed with me?" Qiluo shouted at Ling. "Because you seduced me. I happened to be seduced by you. That's all. We both were willing. That's what for the moment is all about." Ling said after he turned back to face Qiluo. Ling turned around and left. "But I'm serious." Qingmei shouted at him. Ling turned around to face Qingmei again. "I will never let Han Qiluo take you away from me." Qingmei said. "So it was you. It was you who had done that nonsense today." Ling said. "You forced my hand. It was all caused by you." Qingmei said. Ling started pacing toward Qingmei and stopped in front of Qingmei. "You should know. I'm a real bad guy who can own eight girls at the same time. You were willing to be one of the eight, weren't you? But I'm telling you now. Han Qiluo is completely different from the other eight. You'd better stay away from her." Ling said. "I don't care how many girlfriends you've got. I don't care how you think of me, either. I only care the position Han Qiluo occupies in your heart." Qingmei said. "Are you sick?" Ling said. "I just couldn't stand Han Qiluo. I can't stand you treat her differently from others." Qingmei cried. "I swear I'll use every means I have to keep her away from you." Qingmei yelled at Ling and then left. "What... What is that who treats whom differently?" Ling murmured. "Here is your hot dog." Daye said as he handed a hot dog to a customer. The customer gave Daye money. "Thank you." Daye said as he handed change to the customer. "I've already seen you." Daye said as he slapped Ling's wrist with a tong when Ling tried to steal a hot dog. "There is no need to hurt our brotherly feelings simply for a little hot dog." Ling said. "Am I that kind of person?" Daye said to Ling. "What are you angry about?" Ling asked after he took a hot dog. "I'm not angry. It is just that whatever you do; you never really think it over. Forget it. I'm not wasting my time on someone not born with intelligence like you." Daye said while Ling was eating his hot dog. "Hey, what are you doing later on?" Ling asked Daye. "I have other things planed. I've to pick up my younger brother and sister after school." Daye said. "How about tomorrow?" Ling asked. "What for?" Daye asked. Ling, Qiluo, and Daye sitting at a table "Weren't you two high school classmates? Why isn't there anything to talk about?" Ling asked Qiluo and Daye. "Didn't you help her out? Nothing to talk about?" Ling asked Daye. "Thank you. Thank you for the juice." Qiluo finally spoke up. "You're welcome." Daye said. "If we continue like this, I’ll probably fall asleep in no time." Ling said. "All right. Qiluo, one word from you. Will you date with Daye?" Ling sat up and asked Qiluo. "Ling!" Daye was nervous. "You told me you liked Qiluo. Was it a lie?" Ling said. "Of course not." Daye said. "Then this is fine. Why don't you say it straight?" Ling said. "But..." Daye looked at Qiluo anxiously. "But what?" Ling said. "Fine." Qiluo said. Ling looked greatly surprised. "What I mean is that Daye and I can give it a try." Qiluo said. "OK. Then what follows is none of my business. I'll take off. Bye bye. Daye, go for it." Ling said. "Ling, hold on." Qiluo said and then she bent down to pick up a shopping bag. "Thank you for your jacket." Qiluo said as she gave the shopping bag to Ling. Ling took the bag and turned to leave. "You pay the bill." Ling said and patted Daye before he left. "How are we going to start now? How about strolling around a little bit?" Daye asked Qiluo. Qiluo looked up at Daye, nodded her head and looked downward again. Qiluo and Daye walking on a street "We seem to meet each other quite a lot. We have been classmates from high school to college." Daye said to Qiluo. "Do you remember that one time there was a folk dance, but you dared not dance? The two of us stayed by ourselves in a classroom for the whole afternoon. Time has been flying, it's been four years. We've been classmates for more than four years." Daye continued talking. "Would you like some coffee?" Daye asked. "Fine." Qiluo agreed. "Or we should just go watching some movies. I heard there are some good movies lately." Daye changed his mind after glancing around quickly. "I don't care." Qiluo said. "I'll go get tickets. Wait here a bit for me." Daye said. Daye turned to walk in the opposite direction. He stopped after walking a few paces and turned around to watch Qiluo. "Qiluo." Daye called her when he saw Qiluo continuing walking forward. Qiluo turned around to face Daye. "You aren't having a good time, are you?" Daye asked Qiluo. "No." Qiluo smiled and answered. "Then I'll go get the tickets." Daye said before he turned around and running. Qiluo and Daye sitting opposite each other at an outdoors cafe. "It seems that we don't have much to talk about." Daye commented after Qiluo took a sip of her drink. "I'm always a loner. It's always been like that." Qiluo said. "I have always thought that someone like Ling is the type you would never consider. I have never thought that you would get along so well with him. To be honest. I was very surprised." Daye said. "I've never been good at talking. Whatever I want to say, I paint them in my paintings. The reason he started talking to me was also because of my paintings." Qiluo explained. "Your paintings? Hah. When did he become so cultured?" Daye said, looking surprised. They both laughed. "Was it a beautiful woman in nude?" Daye asked. "No. It was a drawing of a mother holding a baby. A very common drawing." Qiluo said. "No wonder he likes it." Daye said. "Why?" Qiluo asked. "It's because Ling doesn't have a mother. I heard his mother died when he was really little." Daye said. "Qiluo, you really like Ling, don't you?" Daye asked Qiluo. "No. Why did you feel that way?" Qiluo said after she shook her head to deny it. "It is because you don't seem to have anything to say since the afternoon. But you become so happy when we talk about Ling. Even you eyes look different." Daye said after some hesitation. Daye's cell phone alarm went off. Daye took out his cell phone to check the time. "It's about time. We can leave now." Daye said to Qiluo. Daye searched all his pockets, book bag, and looked around, but could not find their movie tickets. "Movie tickets. They are gone." Daye said and searched his book bag again. "They are gone." Daye said and started looking for them again. "That's okay. We don't have to watch movies." Qiluo said. "No. I lined up for a long time for them." Daye said. Daye searched again but still couldn't find them. "No! I'll try to buy another ticket." Daye said. "No. It's okay. The movie has already started anyway." Qiluo said. "It doesn’t matter. Wait for me here. I'll be right back." Daye said to Qiluo and then hurried off. "Daye. It's really okay." Qiluo shouted after him. At a subway station "You can stop here. Thank you for spending the day with me." Qiluo said to Daye. "It should have been the other way around." Daye said. "Bye bye." Qiluo said and turned to leave. After walking up a few steps, Qiluo paused and turned to look at Daye. "Why did you willingly drop out of the folk dance competition in high school?" Qiluo asked. "Because it was the only way that I could be alone with you." Daye said. "See you. Bye Bye." Qiluo said and then turned to leave. Ling eating dinner alone in a restaurant. Qiluo's room Qiluo, sitting on the bed, was putting things away. She looked at the mother and child drawing and remembered what Daye had said that Ling liked the drawing because Ling had lost his mother since he was very little. Daye waiting for Qiluo at the building entrance "Qiluo." Daye called when he saw Qiluo. "Are you having a general-education class, too?" Qiluo asked. "Good morning." Daye said as he opened his bag. "Good morning. Qiluo." Qingmei's friends cut in. They stood next to Qiluo. "Sorry to interrupt. Can we borrow Qiluo for a bit, okay?" They said to Daye. "It's okay. You girls talked first." Daye replied. "I'm going to the class now. I'll talk to you later." Daye said to Qiluo and then left. In a hidden spot closed to the gym Qingmei, sitting under a tree waiting, stood up when she saw Qiluo and her friends. "I remember I warned you previously." Qingmei said to Qiluo. "Over there." Qingmei's friends pushed Qiluo toward Qingmei. Qingmei slapped Qiluo's face hard and Qiluo fell to the ground. "You really are a forgetful kid." Qingmei said. "Weren't you told when you were little, that if you don't do as you're told, you'd be punished?" Qingmei said to Qiluo coldly. In the classroom Ling was chatting with the student sitting next to him. Daye came to sit next to Ling. "How did it go?" Ling asked Daye. "What're you talking about?" Daye answered. "Bullshit. Of course I'm asking about your date." Ling said. "Judging from your expression, it should have gone pretty well." Ling said. In the hidden spot among trees "Tattoos are in now. Do you know that? If you dare come near Ling, I'll tattoo for you for free. How about that?" Qingmei said, holding a cigarette between her fingers and waving at Qiluo. "Didn't you say Ling couldn't possibly be serious with me? Why do I matter to you?" Qiluo said, frightened. "You're very articulate, but I don't want to waste my time on your rubbish. Say it. Say you will never ever come near him again. Say you will never ask him to model for you again." Qingmei said. "Otherwise I'll use this to burn your hand." Qingmei said, holding up her cigarette threateningly. "It will hurt for one week and you won't even be able to talk." Qingmei said. She pointed the cigarette at Qiluo's palm and started gradually lowering her cigarette. "I don't have any patience. My cigarette has even less patience." Qingmei said. "Are you listening to what I'm saying?" Qingmei yelled at Qingmei. "Was it only for a week? As long as I cry a week, you'll allow me to like Ling. Right?" Qiluo asked Qingmei. "Come to hold her hand tight! Come to hold her hand tight!" Qingmei yelled at her friends. Qingmei threw away her cigarette and stood up. She walked and looked around and found a big stone. Qingmei picked up the big stone. "Qingmei, what are you going to do?" One of Qingmei's friends asked her. "To smash her hand. This should be big enough." Qingmei answered. Back in the classroom "Where is Qiluo? Aren't you two together?" Ling asked Daye. "Mia and her friend came to look for her." Daye said. "The Mia in our department." Ling asked. "That's right. The one in our department." Daye said. "Where are they?" Ling asked. "I don't know. They seemed to walk toward the gym." Daye said. Ling jumped out of his seat and ran out of the classroom. Daye followed him immediately. Ling bumped into Teacher Shi on the way running downstairs. "Chen Ling, what has gone wrong with your life? You have to use such an abnormal way even for walking down the stairs." Teacher Shi yelled at Ling. In the hidden spot among trees Qingmei walked and stopped in front of Qiluo, holding the big stone in one of her hand. "Why are you so obstinate? It hurts when your hand is smashed. Is it worth it for a man? Say you'll never come near him. Say you have given him up." Qingmei said to Qiluo. "No." Qiluo said. "Don't you even care that you will never be able to paint?" Qingmei yelled at Qiluo. "If I can't paint with my right hand, I still have my left hand. If I don't hands, I can paint with my feet. If I don't have feet, I can use my mouth to hold a pen and continue painting." Qiluo said. "Qingmei." One of Qingmei friends called her. Qingmei held the big stone up in the air. Qiluo closed her eyes, waiting for Qingmei to smash her hand. "Yaaa!" Qingmei screamed and then threw the stone at the ground. Ling arrived at the spot Ling saw the big stone by Qiluo and Qiluo was holding her hand. Ling crouched down in front of Qiluo. Daye also arrived. "You." Ling asked. "Nothing happened. I'm fine." Qiluo said. Ling held Qiluo in his arms and patted her. Qiluo started crying. Daye watched them in silence. At the nurse office Qiluo was lying in bed. Ling and Daye were talking to a nurse outside Qiluo's room. "Why did she faint?" The nurse asked Ling. "How would I know? Haven't girls got something annoying every month?" Ling answered. "You did something to her, didn't you?" The nurse kept grilling Ling. "Oh. Teacher, cross my heart and hope to die. I'm the good person who took her to the nurse office." Ling protested. "What he says is true." Daye cut in. Ling nodded. "Fine." The nurse said and turned to leave. "Wei. This is unbearable. You guys believe in whatever he says, but not a word of me." Ling said, as he pointed to himself. "Aren't you guys too..." Ling stopped in the middle when he happened to glance in Qiluo's direction. "You're stubborn." Ling said to Qiluo. Daye left the nurse office "Daye." Ling came out the nurse office to stop him. Ling walked next to Daye. "If anything happens to Qiluo because of you, I'll never let you get away with it." Daye said and then left. Ling leaned against the wall, thinking. At a pub Qingmei sat alone at a bar counter in a pub. The bartender was mixing a drink for another customer. The bartender placed the drink he'd just finished in front of the customer next to Qingmei. Qingmei gulped down her drink. "Do you want another drink?" The bartender asked Qingmei. Qingmei nodded her head. The bartender finished Qingmei's drink and slid the drink over to her. Ling came to Qingmei's side. "What would you like?" The bartender asked Ling. "Give me a whisky." Ling said. "I've never thought you've got a soft spot." Ling said to Qingmei. "It happened this time. Not sure about next time." Qingmei said. "Very good. It's your call." Ling said and nodded his head. "But I'll kill you." Ling said as he turned sideway to face Qingmei. "You will kill me because of her. Don't bluff." Qingmei said. "I'm will kill you for sure." Ling bent closer to Qingmei and repeated his threat. Ling gulped down his drink, stood up, and left. Qingmei gulped down her drink. Daye came to the bar Qingmei was sitting alone on the floor. Daye brought two bottles of drink. He put one bottle on the floor next to Qingmei and then sat across from Qingmei. "He said he would kill me. How could he treat me like that?" Qingmei said. "Because you have gone too far this time." Daye said. "He's never been serious with girls. What did you have to act like that?" Daye said. "No. It's not just temporal. I've been watching him for a long time. So I know it. I've never seen him look like that. And his eyes are so gentle. Sometimes when he looks at Han Qiluo, his eyes look sad. Although they're just fleeting moments, they make my heart ache. I get pissed off talking about her. Her hand was about to be smashed, but all she cared about was Ling. She didn't care what happened to her." Qingmei said. "In fact, they are drawn to each other. It's just that they haven't found it out." Daye said. "I've liked Ling since the freshman year. I like him so much. So I've been waiting for him. I feel someday he will come back to my side." Qingmei said. "I've also liked Qiluo very much since high school." Daye said. "It's not fair." Qingmei said. "Yes. It is not fair, but what can you do?" Daye agreed. "I'm so jealousy of her." Qingmei said. "You're stronger than I am. I've never been brave enough to say I'm jealousy of Ling because I dare not be jealousy of him. So I can only choose to be his friend, a shadow of him." Daye said. "Can we only be their shadows?" Qingmei asked. "Or be their enemies." Daye said. "How are you going to go about it?" Qingmei asked. Qiluo studying in her room She looked at her hand, turning her hand around. She noticed that there was motorcycle sound. Qiluo went to the window to check. Immediately, Qiluo ran out of the apartment. It was Ling sitting at his bike outside the apartment building. "I've just finished my work. So I stop by to see if you're feeling better." Ling said to Qiluo. Ling sitting sideway on his bike facing Qiluo who was sitting atop the curb. "I'll never let them do those things again. No matter what, it will never happen. Words coming out of people like me aren't very convincing. But I'll take care of her." Ling said. "Don't blame her. Because she really likes you." Qiluo said. "Whether she likes me or not has nothing to do with me." Ling said. "Why?" Qiluo asked. "It's because I'm a Chanel. One of my former girlfriends once told me that I was just like expensive and beautiful Chanel. She attracted people's attention when she walked with me on the streets. That's why she liked me. Yeah. Since I'm just a Chanel, when have you seen a channel with emotions?" Ling said. Ling got off his bike. "I feel happy as long as I can attach to the bodies of various girls." Ling said, walking with his back facing Qiluo. "That's all." Ling said after he turned around to face Qiluo. "I'm empty-headed. I'm only after instant gratification. I don't care about love or like” Ling said. Qiluo stood up. "No. it's not like that. You're not that kind of person. I can feel it. You need lots of love. Maybe love is too burdensome for you. So you'd rather live your life with your eyes closed. You're only fortifying yourself by constantly changing girlfriends." Qiluo said. "I'm just this kind of person. You'd better stay away from me." Ling said. "I tell myself too. I tell myself to stay away from you. I'm afraid you might hurt me. You can't possibly like me. But the more I think this way, the more I'm drawn to you involuntarily. In the end, I couldn't even walk away." Qiluo said. Ling kissed Qiluo. "It’s time for me to go back." Qiluo said. "Sorry." Ling apologized as his bracelet got stuck in Qiluo's hair. "It's been with me for a very long time. This kind of lapse has never happened." Ling said. "This is my good luck charm." Ling said as he removed the bracelet. "I won the championship of a four-hour endurance wearing it." Ling said. "It's very beautiful." Qiluo said. "You can have it." Ling said. "You give it to me! But this is your good luck charm." Qiluo said as Ling pulled Qiluo's arm over and put it on her. "It should be able to protect you." Ling said. "Good. You should hurry back home." Ling said. "I'll stay here watching you go home." Ling said. Qiluo ran home. She watched Ling from the window in her room. Qiluo went to bed with Ling's good luck charm, smiling happily. Ling's apartment at night Ling opened the refrigerator to get a bottle of drink. He sat down on the floor in dim lights drinking, with images of him and Daye flashed through his mind. Qiluo waiting for Ling at the entrance of a school building Ling arrived and saw Qiluo waiting for him. Ling hesitated for a moment and then walked up to her. "Good morning." Qiluo greeted Ling. "Good morning." Ling said. Qiluo started walking. Ling walked with her. "Qiluo." Ling stopped her. "Um... Yesterday..." Ling said. "You mean the bracelet. I can return it to you." Qiluo said while removing the bracelet. "No. No." Ling stopped her. "Do you know, sometimes in foreign countries, it's just a polite way of greeting each other between friends? It doesn't mean anything. It's just..." Ling said. "It was just for the moment." Qiluo interrupted him. "Yes." Ling nodded. "So the relationship between us is still..." Ling said. "I understand. I don't mind it." Qiluo. Qiluo walked ahead by herself and started sobbing. Ling noticed that Daye was watching them "There is something I'd like to clarify with you before class starts." Daye said to Ling. Daye walked ahead by himself. Ling followed him after pausing for a moment. Qiluo walking in the hallway absent-mindedly. Qiluo stopped when she finally saw Qingmei standing in the hallway waiting for her. Rooftop balcony Daye led Ling to the rooftop balcony. When they stopped, Daye turned abruptly and hit Ling at the face really hard. In the hallway Qingmei walked slowly toward Qiluo and stopped in front of her. "You think you have won, don't you?" Qingmei asked. Rooftop balcony "This means that I have decided to give up Qiluo." Daye said to Ling. "I'll let this pass, but...” Ling said. Daye extended his hand to stop Ling. "I know emotions are not something which can be resolved by time. Even though now I still like her a lot, I know there's no chance. It'll never be possible because what she likes is you." Daye said. "You know who I am, don't you? Why do you push her into the bonfire?" Ling asked. "Even if you're a disaster for Qiluo, it's her own choice." Daye said. "What I hate most is that people have obviously lost and pitied by their opponents. If you still think me as a friend, don't look at me with that kind of expression. And you don't have to say any more. I'll root for you two. Two useless fools." Daye said. "Useless fools." Ling muttered and then turned to look at Daye's retreating back. "What are you talking about?" Ling said. In the hallway "Don't be too smug. If you continue with him, sooner or later you'll lose your life." Qingmei said to Qiluo and continued walking. "Qingmei." Qiluo stopped her. "You were right. He couldn't possibly like someone like me." Qiluo said. "Fool." Qingmei said over her shoulder to Qiluo. ***************************End of Episode 2 *************************** Back to the top |
